Why it matters where you buy

The people running these stands are growing on their own land and selling what their family can't eat, or baking on a Thursday night for a Friday table. Money spent at the stand goes to the household that did the work, without a distributor, a shelf fee or a platform taking a cut on the way through.

That matters for anyone farming alongside another job, which is a lot of people out here. A good season at the stand can be what covers seed, feed, a new cooler, or the fuel to keep the whole thing going another year.

If you're visiting

North Georgia fills up in the fall for the leaves, the apple houses and the cabins on the ridge. Pulling over at a farm stand puts part of that weekend straight into the county you drove up to enjoy, and you'll eat better on the way home for it.

Bring small bills, since plenty of stands run on cash or an honor box, and go earlier in the day than you think you need to. Tell them where you found them, too — that's usually what convinces the next stand down the road to get listed.

You already know some of these stands. This directory is for the ones you don't: the table two roads over you've never had a reason to turn down, or the bakery that only opens on the days you're at work.

Following a stand's page costs you nothing and does real work for them. A share to a local group on a Saturday morning moves more off their shelves than anything we can do from here.

What we do, and what we don't

The directory is free to browse and free to be listed in. We don't take orders, handle payments, arrange delivery or take a commission on anything — you find a stand here, then you go buy from them directly.

Nobody pays for placement or a better spot in the list. A person reads every submission before it goes live, which is the only gatekeeping that happens here.

Listings come from what stand owners send us and what neighbors pass along, so some details are bound to be out of date. Categories and descriptions here are our reading of a stand rather than the owner's own words.

Hours and inventory live on each stand's own page, because those change week to week and we can't keep up with them from here. Every listing has a suggest an edit link, and corrections get made quickly.

Where it's going

We started in Gilmer County and we're working outward — Fannin, Pickens, Union, Dawson, Lumpkin, Cherokee and the rest of North Georgia. The fastest way to help is to add the stand down your road, whether or not it's yours.

Every stand added makes this worth more to everyone already on it. A stand nobody can find might as well not have a sign.
